A lyric from the Canto song "Heavenly Ladder" goes: "How many couples can continue loving until what age, when life can still risk everything for you." This is a true portrayal of the 80-year love story of 95-year-old Mr. Lee and 94-year-old Mrs. Lee. Mr. Lee fell in love with his then 14-year-old wife at first sight 80 years ago. Throughout their 60 years of marriage, they have supported each other through thick and thin. Even after his wife was diagnosed with dementia and her memory began to fade, he still upheld the promise he made on their wedding day, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to caring for her.
The Jockey Club Centre for Positive Ageing recently organized a special cruise trip called "Jockey Club Intergenerational Cruise Adventure," arranging for 14 families, totaling nearly 50 people, to board Asia's largest Royal Caribbean cruise ship, "Spectrum of the Seas," for a two-night vacation on the water. The trip offered dementia-friendly activities, including gentle stretching exercises, an evocative "Nostalgic Hong Kong Night," and family group games, allowing participants to feel care and support amidst the beautiful sea and sky scenery. Mr. and Mrs. Lee, aged 95 and 94, were among the participating families. This vacation was also a 60th wedding anniversary trip thoughtfully arranged by their daughter. The Jockey Club Centre for Positive Ageing shared the couple's sweet love story on their official Facebook page.
A Plate of Wontons Sealed a Lifetime of Love
"I was 15, and she was only 14." Asked about the origin of their acquaintance, Mr. Lee spoke endlessly, his thoughts instantly returning to 80 years ago. Back then, he came from the mainland to Hong Kong to make a living, lodging with a distant relative's family where he met the young Mrs. Lee and fell for her at first sight. "I liked her because she was so pure and simple," Mr. Lee said with a smile.
What impressed him most was the memory of first summoning the courage to ask her out to eat "Kam Lo Wonton" (deep-fried wontons served with sweet and sour sauce). After the meal, this petite young girl said earnestly, "I have money too. Next time, it's my treat!" This innocence and integrity made Mr. Lee certain she was the one.
From Health to Sickness: A Promise Fulfilled as the Gentlest Guardian
Decades after their marriage, from their youthful days to graying hair, Mrs. Lee's trust in her husband never wavered. She always entrusted all family matters, big and small, to him. However, ten years ago, Mrs. Lee was diagnosed with dementia, and her memories began to fade like the receding tide. But Mr. Lee never retreated. He took care of her, caring for her meticulously without regret, gently portraying the wedding vow to "love and cherish, in sickness and in health" through his daily actions.
A Three-Day Cruise Fulfilled the Wife's Long-Held Travel Dream
Mrs. Lee had always longed for a cruise trip, but long voyages were taxing on her health. This three-day short trip fulfilled her wish of many years. In the ship's restaurant, Mr. Lee gently held his wife's hand to serve her food, patiently talking to her as he slowly chewed his own meal. The heartwarming scene was deeply moving.
An 80-year connection, a 60-year marriage. From a plate of Kam Lo Wonton to growing old together, Mr. Lee still remembers the shy image of her at 14. In her gradually fading world, he remains her most stable support.
