The organizers of the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) announced on Thursday that Shenzhen-born Chinese mathematician Deng Yu has been awarded the Fields Medal, a prestigious honor widely regarded as the "Nobel Prize of Mathematics."
The 36-year-old Deng, born in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, in 1989, currently serves as a professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Chicago.
Sharing the global stage is Wang Hong, born in Guilin, Guangxi Province, China, in 1991, who was also named a Fields Medalist.
Wang is currently a permanent professor at the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES) in France and a professor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University.
This achievement marks the first time Chinese mathematicians have won two Fields Medals at the same International Congress of Mathematicians, representing a historic milestone in the development of mathematics in China.
