Twelve people were trapped after a roller coaster at Hong Kong Disneyland malfunctioned and hung in mid-air around 3.15 pm on Wednesday.
It is understood that the involved roller coaster is the two-car Hyperspace Mountain ride.
According to photos circulated on social media, a number of firefighters were seen entering the facility to initiate rescue.
All 12 people were rescued around an hour later. No injuries have been reported, and there is no smoke or fire at the scene.
According to the park’s website, the ride – located in Tomorrowland – is the reimagining of the classic Space Mountain attraction and brings guests through a Star War fighter jet battle.
“Due to routine maintenance and inspection, Hyperspace Mountain will be temporarily suspended from February 26 to March 1, 2024,” it said.
The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department said preliminary findings revealed that delays in the loading and unloading area were to blame for the roller coaster passenger entrapment incident.
“Due to delays in the loading and unloading area, the safety system activated and stopped all trains on the track to prevent other trains from entering the area,” the Department said on Wednesday.
“Since a train was stopped in an area that was difficult to access, the Disneyland followed the operational procedures to firstly notify the Fire Services Department to seek assistance before arranging the passengers to leave the roller coaster,” the spokesman added.
The department said it has launched a probe into the incident and requested the theme park to conduct a comprehensive inspection of the concerned roller coaster and submit a report.
