Life guard union says people still go to beaches despite closures

The Hong Kong & Kowloon Life Guards Union said today despite the Leisure and Cultural Services Department had closed all swimming pools and gazetted beaches on July 15 as well as suspending life saving services, a large group of people still go to beaches to play and relax due to measures and publicity and education are not comprehensive enough.

And not only there are crowds, but most of them do not wear face masks, which is prone to infections. When there are accidents or injuries, they still seek help from life guards and life guards will provide assistance and rescue due to the motto of providing emergency relief.

The union said this puts life guards, who are without sufficient protective equipment and facing understaffing issues, in danger and demanded the LCSD to take correspondent measures to deal with the situation.

It also urged people to stay at home as much as possible and wear face masks when going outside and reminds life guards to evaluate safety before rescuing.
