Hospital Authority says protective gear can last month

The Hospital Authority said today it has reserves of 2.2 million sets of protective clothing and 1.6 million surgical masks, enough for a month.

The Chief Manager of Infection, Emergency and Contingency, Vivien Chuang, said among the 60,000 medical workers, each person uses four to six face masks a day.

Chuang said all frontline workers who handle confirmed or suspected Wuhan coronavirus cases will be provided with N95 masks and protective clothing.

As for workers being asked by hospitals to reuse N95 masks, Chuang said based on the World Health Organization's suggestion, workers handling different patients in the same hospital only have to change protective clothing and gloves, while face masks can be kept until they leave the area. She added that if masks are soiled or wet, they can be changed.
