A teenager was out on bail after a video of him allegedly bashing and kicking his girlfriend on a street in Tsim Sha Tsui went viral and led to his arrest.

Kwan, 16, was arrested in the district Wednesday on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, an offense punishable by up to three years in prison if convicted.

Yau Tsim inspector Luk Chi-ho said Kwan was unemployed and had a triad background.

The teenager is allegedly linked to Sun Yee On, one of the biggest triads in Hong Kong and the mainland.

The video, taken Tuesday, shows a teenager viciously beating his apparent girlfriend.

The arrest came after police noticed the video posted on Facebook showing the assault near the junction of Kimberley Road and Austin Avenue.

Video footage circulating online showed the teen slapping and punching the girl before she fell down and knelt in front of him.

He then grabbed her by the hair, pulled her up and started to punch her in the face, before kicking her in the waist.

The 38-second video ended with the girl lying on the ground.

The boy kept yelling at the girl and did not stop even though she begged him to stop many times in the video.

The incident occurred at 10.40 am on Tuesday outside shops at 7-9 Austin Road and the video was uploaded the same day.

Luk said the couple then got in a taxi.

The teen must report to the police in late November. He has not been charged.

Luk added police were investigating if he had been under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

He also appealed to the assault victim in the video to contact police to assist in the investigation.
