The photograph captures a female passenger with a large, pink-colored cylinder, believed to be a compressed gas tank, placed on the floor in front of her seat.
The woman is seen looking down at her phone, appearing calm and unconcerned by the object, while fellow passengers around her also seem placid and are similarly engrossed in their own mobile phones.
In response to an inquiry from The Standard's sister publication, Sing Tao Headline, an MTR Corporation spokesperson stated that they were unaware of the photo's origin or when it was taken, adding that a check of recent records showed no reports of such an incident.
Meanwhile, netizens speculated on the canister's contents, with some suggesting it was helium for party balloons, while others believed it was refrigerant gas used by air-conditioning technicians.
Many also expressed shock and anger, questioning the safety of carrying such an item and criticizing the passenger's disregard for the public.
The MTR Corporation reiterated that it strictly prohibits any person from carrying dangerous or flammable goods, including liquefied petroleum gas and compressed gases, into the MTR system.
"If passengers witness such a situation, they should immediately notify MTR staff for appropriate follow-up," the spokesperson said.
