The UITP Summit is the most important global event for public transport, covering all modes and drawing government bodies, operators, and suppliers from over 100 countries each year.
The three-day summit will highlight cutting-edge technologies, discuss the future of transport, and showcase the host city’s public transport achievements. Organizers expect around 10,000 attendees in 2028.
The MTR Corporation stated that public transport usage among Hong Kong residents accounts for 90 percent. Hong Kong holds a leading position among international cities, and its railways play a crucial role in its public transport system.
The MTR stated that being chosen over other applicant cities recognizes Hong Kong’s strong commitment to public transport development and its central role.
Jeny Yeung Mei-chun, Chief Executive Officer of the MTR Corporation, said it is an honor to bring the UITP summit to Hong Kong.
She said the event will serve as a key platform to address challenges and opportunities from technology advances, asset management, passenger needs, and changing political landscapes.
The MTR looks forward to presenting Hong Kong’s efficient and sustainable public transport model—built through government, industry, and community collaboration—and welcomes global leaders and innovators to the city.
Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan confirmed full government support for the MTR in hosting the event. She invited public transport operators and partners worldwide to participate and experience Hong Kong’s world-class system.
Chan noted that the Highways Department recently launched the Hong Kong Railway Standard and set up the Railway Checking Unit.
As a key participant and shareholder in railway development, the MTR will first apply the standard to the Northern Link project.
She added that the UITP Summit offers a timely international stage to promote the Hong Kong Railway Standard globally and strengthen Hong Kong’s transport brand.
The UITP is the world’s largest international organization dedicated to public transport, serving as the only global network uniting all stakeholders and sustainable transport modes.
