Occupy inspired democracy movement, Joshua Wong says
Local | 28 Sep 2018 11:53 amStudent leader Joshua Wong Chi-fung said today that although the Occupy movement did not bring democracy to Hong Kong, he has no regrets as it spawned a generation with political awareness.
Speaking on the fourth anniversary of the 79-day protests which started on September 28, 2014, Wong said it showed to the world that people in the city wanted democracy.
He said he has no regrets about the events which saw key roads of the city occupied by those protesting against Beijing's plan for political reform.
"Even [though] we can't achieve concrete reform during the civil disobedience, I still believe that ... [its] legacy [was] the Hong Kong democracy movement," he said.
Wong said he has not given up pushing for greater political freedom.
The Demosisto leader also said even though his party is only calling for self determination and not independence, Beijing may still target them in near future.
