Stuart will become group customer and culture director once the British lender has named his successor for the UK CEO position, according to a statement on Tuesday. He will continue to report to CEO Georges Elhedery in the new role.
Stuart joined HSBC a little more than a decade ago to lead its commercial banking business in the UK and Europe after stints at Barclays and NatWest Group. A lifelong banker, Stuart left school at 16 to start work as a cashier in a bank branch. He ultimately attended the University of Reading’s night school, where he obtained a diploma in management.
Stuart is considered a fixture at City of London events and is a member of the UK Finance board, the UK Investment Council and TheCityUK board. The company has already begun a search for his successor in the UK role.
In his new position “Ian will consistently challenge the group operating committee in shaping the culture, ensuring that the voice of the customer informs every decision and action we take,” Elhedery said.
