The foreign ministers of Germany and China are stressing the importance of global free trade shortly before the United States is expected to slap restrictions on imported steel and aluminum.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said today at a news conference with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi that, "protectionism and isolation against free trade mustn't regain the upper hand.''

Maas said neither Germany nor China had an interest in, "turning back the clocks when it comes to trade policy.''

Wang stressed the importance of the two countries' common interests when it comes to finance and security policies. He said that China would continue to open its markets for its trade partners.-AP
