Hong Kong's National Security Department charged a 61-year-old man on Thursday with knowingly publishing materials with seditious intent, following his arrest in November 2025 for online posts allegedly inciting hatred against China's constitutional system and Hong Kong authorities.
The man, surnamed Chong, faces one count of "knowingly publishing publications that had a seditious intention" of the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance for repeatedly posting messages on a social media platform that aimed to provoke disaffection toward the fundamental state system established by China's Constitution, as well as Hong Kong's constitutional order and its executive, legislative, and judicial branches.
Police investigations indicated the posts included false comments targeting the central and Hong Kong governments, along with calls for the dissolution of central authority and Hong Kong independence.
The suspect is reportedly an active member of Falun Gong, a group designated as illegal in mainland China, and often participated in street promotions of the organization.
The offense carries a maximum penalty of seven years' imprisonment, or up to ten years if involving collusion with foreign forces.
Authorities warned the public against engaging in or assisting activities endangering national security.
The case was scheduled for mention at West Kowloon Magistrates' Court this afternoon.
