Chief Superintendent Steve Li Kwai-wah of the police National Security Department welcomed Jimmy Lai Chi-ying's 20-year sentence on Monday, describing it as "a reflection of the severe nature of his crimes."

Li called Lai the "mastermind" behind the case, who colluded with foreign forces to impose sanctions on Hong Kong and used his media organizations to make reactionary propaganda, stressing that his behavior was "despicable."

He also dismissed Lai's mitigation arguments regarding health issues, stressing that Lai had received appropriate treatment during custody.

Regarding the solitary confinement, Li said the arrangement was made in accordance with Lai's own wishes and handled by the Correctional Services Department after considering all relevant factors.

On the shorter sentences for the accomplice witnesses who testified against Lai, Li stated that the sentencing reflects the principle within the National Security Law that allows for mitigated penalties for those who expose the crimes of others.

Li noted that the process from Lai's arrest to his sentencing took five and a half years and involved a 156-day trial, during which Lai testified in his own defense for 56 days. The case involved over 2,000 pieces of evidence.

"This reflects the rigor of Hong Kong's judicial system and is the best illustration of the city's spirit of the rule of law," Li said.

He further reiterated that the verdict was "free from any interference and absolutely without any so-called political considerations," citing the 855-page court document detailing the reasons for the verdict.
