All members of the Legislative Council issued a joint statement on Sunday strongly condemning a recent European Parliament's resolution on Hong Kong that "maliciously slandered" Hong Kong's judiciary and its National Security Law.
In their statement, they described the resolution as "blatantly interfered in China's internal affairs, and seriously violated the principles of international law."
They expressed full support for statements previously issued by the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong and the SAR government.
The lawmakers reiterated their confidence that the government would continue to implement national security laws resolutely while safeguarding rights and freedoms under the One Country, Two Systems framework.
The statement specifically highlighted the case of Jimmy Lai Chee-ying, stressing that it involved serious criminal offenses under the national security law. It defended the related court proceedings as having been conducted "strictly in accordance with the law, openly and fairly."
They further pointed to the court's detailed 855-page judgment and conviction verdict as "well-founded and well-reasoned", asserting that it demonstrated the ruling was made strictly in accordance with the law, free from any interference or political considerations.
Echoing an earlier government spokesman, the statement warned that suggesting certain individuals or organizations should be immune from legal consequences is akin to advocating a special privilege to break the law, which contradicts the spirit of the rule of law.
The statement concluded by reiterating that Hong Kong matters are China's internal affairs, urging the European Parliament and foreign politicians to respect international law and cease all forms of interference.
