The defense of the case involving Jimmy Lai Chee-ying had confirmed that Lai is currently satisfied with the daily medical checks arranged by the Correctional Services Department, arguing that Lai's former refusal of the doctor's advice to wear a cardiac monitoring device and receive medication had been a misunderstanding.
Some politicians stated that such remarks exposed claims from Lai's son, Sebastien Lai Sung-yan, and external forces about Lai's deteriorating health and inadequate treatment as unfounded.
Sebastien Lai, along with several overseas anti-China politicians, including the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong, had formerly made statements claiming that Lai was being treated inhumanely in prison, that he was not receiving appropriate medical care, and even suggesting that his health was deteriorating rapidly.
"Jimmy Lai's inconsistent behavior raises suspicions. It's possible he's doing so to cooperate with the smear campaigns of foreign affair forces. But facts have once again proven that these foreign forces have been fabricating rumors that are untrue and self-defeating in court," a politician expressed.
Lai had undergone tests performed by a specialist with no abnormalities found on August 7. It was revealed that Lai was recommended to wear a heart monitor and receive medication, but he initially declined these suggestions.
However, a week later, the defense indicated that Lai's earlier refusal might have stemmed from a misunderstanding and stated that he is now in agreement with the proposed care.
The case under the National Security Law is set to complete its closing arguments. The defense requested to proceed without Lai's presence, due to the previously mentioned health issues. Judge Esther Toh Lye-ping adjourned the case for the reason that Lai should be present at all hearings to ensure a fair trial.
Toh emphasized that Lai's health should be a primary consideration and ordered that he start the recommended treatments before continuing the hearing. She took the opportunity to praise the Correctional Services Department for its medical care to Lai.
