Baptists oppose gay laws

July 27, 2005

About 1,500 Christians signed a petition published as a full-page newspaper advertisement Tuesday protesting any government initiative to draft laws banning discrimination against homosexuals.

The Baptists, representing 98 churches and 14 schools in the city, are the latest to join the conflict between religious groups and homosexual organizations.

Tuesday's advertisement in the Ming Pao Daily sought to forestall any government move to draft homosexual anti-discrimination legislation.

Hong Kong officials have shown interest in such initiatives, but said they will seek public consultation before going ahead.

Baptists said they respected the human rights of homosexuals, but fear anti-discrimination laws would strip them of rights to oppose homosexuality, which they see as abnormal, unnatural and the cause of family and public hygiene problems.
