Obama could not afford to turn the Dalai Lama away
Just a week after enraging China with an arms sale package for rival Taiwan, President Barack Obama risks more damage to this crucial relationship by agreeing to meet with the Dalai Lama next week.

Search for the truth
I beg to differ from Gloria Yu's opinion ("All you need is love and diversity," The Standard, January 21). All successful cultures and civilizations have been based on strong nuclear families: mother, father and children.

Reading aloud critical
I read with interest the article "Gift of speech" (The Standard, January 26) on the topic of helping young children improve their speaking abilities. While playing games is very important, research has shown that reading aloud on a regular basis (20 minutes a day) is critical for language development.

A walk into trouble
When the five lawmakers of the Civic Party and the League of Social Democrats went to make resignation speeches in Legco, they were taken to task by Liberal Party and DAB legislators.

Dumbing down
In response to Jeffrey Hui's letter "Dumb comments" (The Standard, February 3): yelling "to liberate the US" happens every day in the United States, and FBI agents would be arrested for knocking on your door rather than you for shouting it.

Life is for living
Regarding the article "It's a real tough life in HK," (The Standard, January 27): the government seriously needs to take care of citizens' living environment.

Hall het up about sex
I usually appreciate reading Dean Li's points of view about university life and agree with them most of the time but "Halls sex scandal rocks university" (The Standard, January 25) made me furious.

Dumb comments
On the evening of January 27, Albert Chan Wai-yip yelled at a gathering "to liberate Hong Kong." At the time, he was still a lawmaker as his resignation had not yet come into effect. I feel very angry - it is ridiculous for a lawmaker to make such dumb comments.

Happy to be here
After reading both Jane L's letter on her MTR experience and the reply from S Chan, I would say that perhaps Jane L's observations and experiences occurred during super peak periods when trains are jam-packed.
