Prison break as Wei Si admits heroin charge
(04-24 20:02)

Cantopop singer Jill Vidal escaped more jail time after she admitted in a Tokyo court to heroin possession and received a two-year sentence that will be suspended for three years.

The reprieve came after Vidal, also known as Wei Si, pleaded guilty when the hearing began at 1.30pm, more than four hours after she first arrived at court in a prisoners' van.

Wei Si has been in jail since she and her singer boyfriend, Kelvin Kwan Chor-yiu, were arrested in late February for marijuana possession.

Police later found 11 packets of heroin, that weighed 1.36 grams in total, in her hotel room.

Wei Si, pictured today, told the court she brought more than 16 packets of the drug over from Hong Kong when she arrived almost 60 days ago. She paid for them directly into a bank account through an ATM.

She admitted having taken illegal drugs more than 100 times over the past year despite her twin sister, Janice, pleading with her to quit.

The judge said he believed Wei Si is genuinely remorseful and asked her to promise her family she would never take drugs again.
Wei Si's father, Joey Vidal, and her manager, Joe Chan, were in the public gallery.

Kwan returned to Hong Kong soon after his arrest when Japanese police declined to press charges.
