Mount Kelly International Preschool and Nursery School offers excellent British education, brimming with a holistic curriculum and one-of-its-kind pastoral care, to develop the all-round individual child.

Possessing over 140 years of excellence in British education, Mount Kelly School, considered one of the top boarding schools in the UK, opened its first overseas campus in Hong Kong in 2017.

The all-through Mount Kelly Hong Kong inherits its sister school’s experiences and values to provide quality British education for children aged between 6 months to 14 years old. Its International Preschool and Nursery School has adopted the UK National Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, striving to help each student reach their full potential.

Personalised British education to develop the individual child

Taking pride in its holistic EYFS curriculum, Mr Gary Wright, founding head principal of Mount Kelly Hong Kong and Chairman of Governors for the Mount Kelly Group in Asia, says the school aims to develop the individual child.

In this connection, Mount Kelly has embraced the small class teaching approach to guarantee students receive optimal attention in their learning. Mr Wright explains: “Every child is unique and has their own needs. With small class size, each classroom has a low teacher to student ratio of 1:8 along with teaching assistants. Therefore, our teachers can provide individualized teaching to help students extend their potential.”

Nevertheless, the EYFS curriculum underscores a purposeful play-based education, offering a wide aspect of extracurricular activities in arts, music and sports. Following the British education style, Mr Wright points out that the school has introduced the house system and Shackleton programme which is designed to develop students’ leadership, practical skills and teamwork. “Students can take part in diverse activities and outdoor learning at an early stage to explore their surroundings and community,” he adds. “All these activities are supported and offered by our teachers. We are not just grooming students to pass an exam but also to develop themselves as an individual.”

Thoughtful bilingual and international streams

With a wide intake of students from different parts of the world, Mount Kelly provides students with two streams: bilingual and international. Mr Wright explains that the main difference lies in the proportion of Chinese learning. “For the bilingual stream, students will have a half-day taught in English and the other in Chinese, while the international stream is mostly taught in English, with Chinese language classes each day,” he says. “It is designed to cater to different students’ language needs and abilities.”

All the language lessons are given by experienced educators. The English expats are mostly from Britain, Ireland and South Africa. As for the Chinese teachers, they are either locals or from mainland China. There are also bilingual teaching assistants, mostly from Hong Kong, who can speak both Chinese and English to facilitate the learning process.

Spacious campus with comprehensive supports in learning

At the International Preschool and Nursery School, students can thrive in the beautiful and playful campus located conveniently in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui. The well-equipped campus comprises a wide array of facilities and resources, including an interactive whiteboard, personal computers, drama hall, library, ICT room with green screen and assembly hall. Thanks to its prime location, Mr Wright adds, it save parents and students commuting time, while the nearby Kowloon Cricket Club’s sports facilities are also available for use.
Aside from the well-equipped campus, the school also offers a series of support to facilitate the student’s personal development and home-school cooperation. Academically, students will be assessed regularly to keep track of their learning, and parents will receive a regular term report. Mr Wright also shares that, in line with UK pastoral care, the school has organised a student council that includes a representative from each class to provide children with individualized support.

He stresses: “We want to cultivate a sense of community in students through different group activities and assemblies, making sure that they are not just academically performing, but also honing behaviour, values and student relationships.

Guaranteed places at Mount Kelly Hong Kong and worldwide

As part of the all-through system at Mount Kelly Hong Kong, the International Preschool and Nursery School offers graduates direct access to its primary education. What’s more, Mr Wright highlights that there will be guaranteed placement at Mount Kelly UK for students in year eight or above.

“Mount Kelly education group is currently expanding itself across the world, and we will have the Japanese campus in 2023. So there is the possibility that students can get a place in our sister schools,” he says.

After a year-long online teaching, Mr Wright looks forward to the new school year ahead with the resumption of face-to-face teaching. “Students are always our top priority, and going forward, we would continue to impart all those Mount Kelly School’s cherished values to our students.”
