A giant panda gifted by the mainland to Taiwan has given birth to a second female cub, the Taipei Zoo announced yesterday.

Yuan Yuan and her partner Tuan Tuan arrived in Taiwan in 2008 - when the self-ruled island was run by the Beijing-friendly Kuomintang party - as a symbol of what were then warm relations between the two sides.

The cub, weighing 186 grams, was born on Sunday after a five-hour labor. Yuan Yuan was tired from the birth and zookeepers decided it was best for the cub to be fed by caretakers.
