Timely lift for Blue Samurai

Japan jolted their faltering World Cup qualifying campaign into life with a dramatic 2-1 home win over Australia.

An 86th-minute own goal from Australia's Aziz Behich in Saitama gave Japan a crucial three points, having started Group B with two defeats from three matches. Japan had gone into the game knowing anything less than a win would put them in danger of missing out on the World Cup for the first time since 1994.

Ao Tanaka gave them the perfect start with a goal in the eighth minute, only for Ajdin Hrustic to equalize with a 70th-minute free-kick. But Behich turned the ball into his own net under pressure from Takuma Asano late on.
