The sporting director of the German cycling federation has been told to return home from the Olympics after making racist remarks during the road time trial.

Patrick Moster made the remarks as he tried to urge on one of Germany's cyclists.

"Get the camel drivers, get the camel drivers, come on," he was heard shouting at Nikias Arndt, who was chasing opponents Azzedine Lagab of Algeria and Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier of Eritrea.

Moster apologized later, blaming his remarks on the heat of the moment, and said he was not a racist.

German officials said it was no longer possible to keep Moster in Tokyo after his comments caused an uproar at the Games as well as back home.
