Nadal won't serve it up at Wimbledon and Olympics

Rafa Nadal pulled out of Wimbledon and the Tokyo Olympics yesterday, saying he wants to prolong his career.

The 35-year-old Spaniard said the two-week gap between the French Open and Wimbledon - which starts on June 28 - was not enough time for him to recuperate after a demanding claycourt season where he played in five tournaments.

"It's never an easy decision to take but after listening to my body and discussing it with my team I understand that it is the right decision," Nadal said on Twitter.

Nadal, a 20-time Grand Slam winner, played in Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid and Rome before the French Open, where he was beaten in a four-set thriller by eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals. "They have been two months of great effort and the decision I take is focused looking at the mid- and long-term," he said.

Nadal has won two Olympic gold medals, including one in doubles at Rio 2016, where he was Spain's flag-bearer.
