Mets GM fired over pics to reporter

Jared Porter lasted just 38 days as New York Mets general manager, fired about nine hours after ESPN reported he sent sexually explicit, uninvited text messages and images to a female reporter in 2016 while he was with Chicago Cubs.

President Sandy Alderson said clubs may have to rethink the depth of hiring background checks. "This is a wakeup call,'' he said. "It clearly suggests something like this can be out ther with almost anyone. And we have to do our best to make sure we know about that.''

All-Star outfielder George Springer became the most prominent of baseball's free agents to reach a deal this offseason, a US$150 million, (HK$1.17 billion) six-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, an insider said.

It would be the largest contract in team history.

Springer, 31, is a three-time All-Star who spent his entire seven-season career with Houston and was the World Series MVP when the Astros beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games for their first title in 2017.

He hit .265 with 14 homers and 32 RBIs during the shortened 2020 season.

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, a major figure in European football, says UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin is considering holding this year's European Championship in a single country, and not in 12 as originally planned.

"One must not forget the idea of this special tournament was born when the coronavirus did not yet exist," Rummenigge told Munich-based newspapers Muenchner Merkur/TZ.

"The EU commission wanted football to be represented throughout Europe. But I know Ceferin is thinking about whether it wouldn't make more sense to play in just one country."
