Lionel Messi was sent off for the first time in his Barcelona career in extra time as they lost 3-2 to Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Super Cup.

Messi, who returned from injury, saw red after striking Asier Villalibre in the final minute.

The Argentine helped Barca take the lead five minutes before the break.

His goalbound effort was blocked and it fell to Antoine Griezmann to net the first of his brace.

Bilbao leveled with Oscar De Marcos two minutes later to send the sides in level at halftime.

Griezmann looked to have won it with a goal 14 minutes from time, only for Villalibre to volley home in the 90th.

Inaki Williams curled a stunning effort into the far corner in extra time to give Bilbao bragging rights.

In Germany, Thomas Mueller set up a goal and scored a second-half winner as Bayern Munich struggled past Freiburg 2-1 to extend their lead at the top of the Bundesliga.
