Guardiola's City will provide guard of honor for Liverpool

Pep Guardiola has confirmed his Manchester City team will form a guard of honor for new Premier League champions Liverpool when they meet this week.

Liverpool's first English league title in 30 years was secured on Friday as second-placed City lost 2-1 at Chelsea.

The top two face off at the Etihad Stadium on Friday (HK time), and Guardiola, whose team won the two previous Premier League titles, says "of course we are going to do it" on the guard of honor.

"We're going to do it because they deserve it."

The Spaniard refuted any suggestion his team have not been as hungry or motivated despite Liverpool winning their 19th league title with a record seven games to spare.

"A team that wins eight trophies in the last three years have passion," declared Guardiola, who led City to a third straight League Cup triumph before the coronavirus lockdown in March.

But Liverpool, he said, were "exceptional, and, when one team is exceptional I say learn from them and congratulate them."
