Barcelona star Lionel Messi and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola have each donated one million euros (HK$8.37 million) towards the fight against coronavirus.

Messi's donation will be split between Hospital Clinic in Barcelona and another medical center in his home country Argentina, according to Marca sports daily.

Guardiola, a native of Barcelona, made his contribution to a campaign launched by the Angel Soler Daniel Foundation and the Medical College of Barcelona for the acquisition and supply of health equipment to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.

The foundation will also help finance the alternative production, through 3D printing and other methods, of respirators and personal protection equipment for health care staff.

Meanwhile, Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo and his agent Jorge Mendes will donate three intensive care units to Portuguese hospitals.

The Portuguese pair will donate to at least two institutions and will give "two intensive care units," with a "capacity of 10 beds each" to the University Hospital Center of Northern Lisbon, a group of hospitals in the country's capital.

Ronaldo and Mendes will also donate a unit to the Santo Antonio Hospital of the University Hospital Center of Porto.
