Laos pair handed life bans for fixing in HK friendly

Sports | AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE 27 Feb 2020

Two Laos national footballers have been handed life bans for match-fixing in a four-goal friendly loss to Hong Kong.

Khampheng Sayavutthi and Lembo Saysana were found guilty by the Asian Football Confederation of "conspiring to manipulate" the result of the October 2017 game in Hong Kong. But details of the fixing stayed private to avoid jeopardizing a continuing probe.

It is not the first time Laos football has come under scrutiny for fixing.

Top club side Lao Toyota were banned from the 2018 AFC Cup for "arranging or influencing" matches in the 2015 and 2016 tournaments.

Ranked 188th in the world, Laos has a weak footballing setup and little money for sports. But Laotians are fervent fans and sponsored teams have began appearing.
