Super Cup-winning time for Real Madrid

Real Madrid were winners of the first edition of the revamped Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia, beating city rivals Atletico Madrid 4-1 in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw after extra time.

A key moment came when Real midfielder Federico Valverde deliberately fouled Alvaro Morata when he was through on goal in the 115th minute, avoiding a clear chance for Atletico but earning a straight red card.

Zinedine Zidane's side then held on to force penalties, and captain Sergio Ramos sent Atletico 'keeper Jan Oblak the wrong way with the decisive fourth kick for Real.

Real's Dani Carvajal, Rodrygo Goes and Luka Modric also scored in the shootout while Saul Niguez hit a post and Thomas Partey's effort was punched away by Thibaut Courtois in a nightmare start for Atletico.

So Real lifted the trophy for an 11th time. It was a 10th trophy for Real under coach Zidane but his first since returning after quitting in 2018.
