'Hellacious' Doncic stars as Mavs stop Lakers

Luka Doncic finished just one rebound shy of a triple-double as the Dallas Mavericks gave the Los Angeles Lakers a reality check by snapping their 10-game win streak with a 114-100 win.

Doncic had 27 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds, as the visiting Mavericks avenged a 119-110 overtime loss to Los Angeles one month ago. "It's a great win that means a lot to us," the 20-year-old said. "It shows that we can play against big teams, too."

The Mavericks improved to 13-6 on the season and were too much to handle for the Lakers, whose win streak came against 10 teams, all with losing records. The last time the Lakers played a team with a better than .500 record, they lost 113-104 to the Toronto Raptors on November 10.

Anthony Davis had 27 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers while LeBron James added 25 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. James also had six of the Lakers' 17 turnovers.

Doncic, who was bloodied and muscled off the ball several times in the November loss to the Lakers, held his ground this time, scoring 16 of his points in the third quarter when the Mavericks took control of the game.

"He hit a couple of hellacious shots," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "There's just a small handful of guys in the whole world that can hit them ... Those step-back 30-footers, it's hard to describe how difficult the shot is, and how easy he makes it look."
