Cristiano Ronaldo will not face charges in Las Vegas over a 10-year-old sexual assault allegation.

The Portuguese football star, now with Italy's Juventus, has maintained he is innocent.

Kathryn Mayorga filed a civil lawsuit in September 2018 in a Nevada court accusing Ronaldo, 34, of raping her in a hotel penthouse suite in 2009 and paying her US$375,000 (HK$2.9 million) in hush money.

A woman had called Las Vegas police on June 13, 2009, to report a sexual assault. But the woman, Mayorga, refused to say who assaulted her.

Mayorga and Ronaldo reached a civil settlement in 2010, but law enforcers did not hear from her again until August 28, 2018, when she asked police to reopen the investigation. She said it was Ronaldo who assaulted her.

Police on July 8 asked the Clark County District Attorney's Office to prosecute the case but received the response: "The allegations of sexual assault against Cristiano Ronaldo cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt."
