Myanmar junta opts to stay out in the cold

A Southeast Asian summit opened yesterday without Myanmar after its junta refused to name a representative following its leader's exclusion from the event.

But Myanmar's absence was not mentioned by Brunei, which currently chairs the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, at the virtual meeting.

Junta boss Min Aung Hlaing, who led a February 1 coup against an elected government, had failed to cease hostilities, allow humanitarian access or open dialogue with opponents as agreed with ASEAN in April.

His sidelining was a rare bold step by a group known for backing off.
