Weinstein pleads not guilty to assault charges

World | AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE 23 Jul 2021

Fallen Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein pleaded not guilty in Los Angeles to 11 charges of rape and sexual assault against five women in California hotel rooms.

The convicted rapist - he is serving 23 years behind bars in New York - could be sentenced to up to another 140 years in prison if he is convicted.

After a cross-country journey for his LA appearance, Weinstein, 69, was slumped in a wheelchair, wearing a brown jumpsuit and ill-fitting blue mask.

"He absolutely, unequivocally and categorically denies the allegations," his lawyer, Mark Werksman, said outside the courthouse.

Weinstein is accused of sexually assaulting five women in LA between 2004 and 2013, with former actress Lauren Young alleging the producer attacked her in a Beverly Hills hotel.

But Weinstein has said all his sexual encounters were consensual.
