US$11m hacker payday after attack on JBS

World | AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE 11 Jun 2021

One of the world's biggest meat processors, JBS, has paid a huge ransom after an attack believed to have originated in Russia.

It was the second big payment to hackers recently.

Hackers targeted the computers of Brazil-based JBS last week, impacting operations in the United States, Australia and Canada.

Its US subsidiary said it paid US$11 million (HK$85.5 million) in bitcoin "to prevent any potential risk for our customers."

A cyberattack in May shut the Colonial fuel pipeline network in the United States. Colonial paid US$4.4 million in ransom to regain control.
