Tragedy strikes as Everest reopens to climbersWorld | AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE 14 May 2021
A climber from the United States and another from Switzerland have died on Mount Everest, expedition organizers in Nepal said.
Swiss climber Abdul Waraich, 40, died after reaching the top and suffering exhaustion, said Chhang Dawa Sherpa of Seven Summit Treks, while American Puwei Liu, 55, reached the Hillary Step - an outcrop just below the summit - but experienced snow blindness and exhaustion before he "suddenly passed away."
In 2019, overcrowding on Mount Everest has been blamed for multiple deaths. To ease crowding at the resumption of expeditions after the pandemic wiped out last year's climbing season, Nepal's tourism ministry capped the number of climbers.
