Taiwan bird group sees strait politics behind expulsionWorld | AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE 16 Sep 2020
A Taiwan bird protection group said it has been kicked out of global conservation partnership BirdLife International after refusing to sign a statement saying it would never advocate for the island's independence from China.
The Taipei-based Chinese Wild Bird Federation said the partnership voted to remove it last week, ending a decades-long partnership.
The group, which had previously changed its English name to satisfy BirdLife, was told to sign a document "formally committing to not promote or advocate the legitimacy of the Republic of China or the independence of Taiwan from China."
The group said it had no stance on the matter, but signing such a document would be political.
