Trump U-turn over golf club G7 summit

World | AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE 21 Oct 2019

Donald Trump says the next G7 summit will not be at one of his own golf clubs, dropping a plan that made the US president a target for scorn.

The White House announced the venue on Thursday, which led to Trump foes calling the idea "among the most brazen examples yet of the president's corruption."

The president has now tweeted "we will no longer consider Trump National Doral, Miami, as host site for the G7 in 2020."

A Trump staffer had said the south Florida venue was "the best place" among a dozen US locations considered for the June gathering.

But critics said holding the event at Doral would violate rules meant to shield a US leader from outside influences.

Doral is vital to the Trump organization's finances and has been a big money spinner, but it has lately been in steep decline. The Washington Post reported in May that its net operating income had fallen by 69 percent in two years.
