Kim extends summit invitation

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un invited US President Donald Trump to visit Pyongyang, a South Korean newspaper reported yesterday, citing diplomatic sources.

In the letter sent in the third week of August, Kim spoke of his "willingness" for a third summit and invited Trump to visit the North Korean capital, the Joongang Ilbo newspaper reported.

Trump on August 9 said he had received a "very beautiful letter" from Kim.

Trump and Kim have met three times since last June to discuss a resolution to the crisis over North Korea's missile and nuclear programs, but progress has been scant.

At their last meeting on June 30, both sides agreed to restart talks but that has not yet happened.

An unidentified director-general for US affairs at North Korea's foreign ministry said yesterday he hoped a "good meeting" with working-level US officials would take place "in a few weeks".

But he called for a more flexible approach.
