Man executed for revenge killing

A man in northwest China was executed yesterday for killing three neighbors in apparent revenge for his mother's death.

The Supreme People's Court in Shaanxi province announced it implemented the death penalty on Zhang Koukou for intentional homicide against three men - two brothers and their father - surnamed Wang.

The court statement detailed the two families' longstanding enmity that dated back to 1996 when a dispute between Zhang's mother and one of the brothers, then 17-year-old Wang Zhengjun, resulted in her succumbing to a fatal injury. Wang was fined 9,639 yuan (HK$10,951) and sentenced to seven years in prison.

There were no further conflicts between the two households, until last year, when Zhang stabbed the three men.

Zhang's capital punishment has been furiously debated online. Some commenters on Weibo praised him for his filial piety and described him as the embodiment of a "real man.''
