Stand up and lose fat

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Conghua Racecourse for the training of Hong Kong's thoroughbred racehorses has started operations, and a show race was held there earlier.

I saw the club's corporate affairs executive director, Raymond Tam Chi-yuen, and noticed that his "spare tire" - midsection spread - was completely gone. Apparently, the busier he is, the better is his physical condition.

Also, he showed no sign of the fatigue that is seen in some people after vigorous slimming. He told me the improvement was the combined effect of exercising and reducing starch in his diet.

The extra exercise of doing a bit more golf has helped him shed 4.5 kilos and tuned up his upper-body muscles too, he explained.

But a tight work schedule allows only so much time for golf, so he has another fitness killer move - work standing up - made possible by a desk with adjustable height that he bought for his office earlier.

Standing more during the workday is most effective in fighting belly fat. Sure enough, the swelling midsection was eliminated after a while, with the small price of replacing old trousers which have became loose at the waist.

The working environment change after he left the administration has also helped.

Tam noted with a chuckle that when he was a policy secretary, he had to attend many Legislative Council meetings.

In those days, filibustering was frequent, and those attending the meetings had to remain seated for hours as protocol does not allow standing up for no reason. Being in a sedentary position for long stretches of time would lead to the accumulation of body fat and bloating.

It is much different now as he is free to choose whether to sit or to stand when he is working.
