Right on course at Disneyland

City talk | 21 Sep 2017

Hong Kong Disneyland partnered with AIA Vitality for its second charity run, which attracted more than 10,000 participants and a big crowd to the park.

Officiating guests of the Sunday events were Disneyland managing director Samuel Lau Wing-kee, Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po and Disney's Asia head Bill Ernest.

Ernest, a famously friendly sort of person, has also been managing director of the local Disneyland. He looks just as radiant as when I last saw him a few years ago.

Many local celebrities took part in the new Spider-Man three-kilometer event. Among those I spotted were WKK International heir Vinci Wong Yin-chi and lawmaker Holden Chow Ho-ding.

Members of the tourism industry also turned out in force, and along with them was Tourism Board corporate affairs general manager Cynthia Leung, who I talked to before the race.

Leung is a keen runner, which I guess is why she is able to maintain a perfect physique despite having ample opportunities to sample delicacies. The 3km run must be a piece of cake for her.

I also saw Hong Kong China Travel Service assistant general manager Perry Yiu Pak-leung, who also looked to be in top shape. I noticed his strong calf muscles and asked if he went jogging often. He laughed and told me his favorite sport is football, though he only plays about once a month.

The day was a bit hot and hazy, but as the route took runners past the main entrance it seemed to me all of them were able to give the race their best shot.

Chow may not look the outdoor type but he was fast, finishing the race in under 20 minutes.

Perry Yiu lived up to his fit look and took second prize. That was when it was pointed out that Yiu, a graduate of the Chinese University department of sports science and physical education, worked as a physical education teacher before joining China Travel Service. So no surprise he did well.

Besides being in good physical shape Yiu is also enthusiastic in going about public duties and is a member of the Kwun Tong District Council.
