A group of 16, including three women, were arrested for drug trafficking after police seized suspected drugs valued at HK$74,000 in an unlicensed bar in Tsim Sha Tsui yesterday.
Several of the suspects, aged between 14 to 40, were gambling when 40 police officers launched a midnight raid on a commercial building unit at Minden Avenue in Tsim Sha Tsui.
The officers waited outside the unit and seized the opportunity to storm into the bar when several patrons opened the door to leave, with some suspects being subdued as they attempted to flee the scene.
Ten people were found to be gambling in a traditional Chinese dice-game of Fish-Prawn-Crab around a table, while others were drinking in the unit.
Police seized six tablets of midazolam, 10 cannabis cigarette rolls, 30 packs of MDMA tablets, 34 grams of cocaine, 36 grams of ketamine and 39 packs of a date rape drug known as "Happy Powder."
Also found at the scene was more than 300 cans of beer and hard liquor, in addition to HK$25,000 in cash.
At a press briefing after, Inspector Jonathan Chan Ho-tin of Tsim Sha Tsui's anti-triad section said the 16 suspects were arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking, operating an unlawful casino, gambling in an unlawful casino, selling liquor without a license and failing to produce proof of identity.
Four of them are suspected to be members of the Wo Shing Wo triads and responsible for operating the unlicensed bar and casino as well as selling drugs.
"Not only did they provide the drugs to people who visited there, they also sold them to many teenagers and residents in the district," Chan said.
He said the bar had been operating for around a month and the police received intelligence about it roughly three weeks ago.
Separately, a security guard contacted police on Saturday to report the whereabouts of a man who had previously stolen from a shop in Cheung Sha Wan.
The security guard followed the 31-year-old Vietnamese man and reported his location to the police.
Officers arrived and followed the suspect to a toilet where he was arrested after a failed escape attempt.
An officer's hand was injured as the suspect attacked the police with an umbrella. He was also found in possession of a small quantity of methamphetamine.
He was arrested for theft, possession of illegal drugs and assaulting a police officer. The case is being handled by the Criminal Investigation Unit of Sham Shui Po police district.
