Brands expo to go on as planned

Security will be heightened at the Hong Kong Brands and Products Expo, which opens today. Visitors will need to go through security checks at the entrance and cannot not bring non-potable liquids and political promotional materials into the fairground.

The 54th edition of the annual event is one of the few outdoor events which will take place this year despite the social unrest, but it will not invite any government officials to the opening ceremony this year.

This year's expo will also be shorter at 22 days instead of the previous 24.

Like previous years, the expo will be held at Victoria Park in Causeway Bay from today until the end of this month. Opening hours will be shortened by two hours from 11am to 8pm, but it will close at 6pm on the last day. Raymond Young Lap-moon,the chief executive of the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong, the organizers of the event, said they have doubled the number of security guards at the event, and all visitors will have to undergo bag checks.

"We will be as tolerant as possible. For example, if there are protesters chanting slogans in the venue, and they do not affect other shoppers or stalls, we will not carry out any special measures on this," Young said. "If there are too many people affecting public order or obstructing other people, we will ask them to consider the situation and hope they leave after expressing their opinions," he said.

He also expects fewer visitors this year as the travel warning to Hong Kong is still in effect, and mainland visitors may not come to the expo this year.
