A couple was sentenced to 12 months probation after assaulting their daughters, aged 12 and 18, for stealing money, buying the wrong amount of beer and eating food without permission.

Construction worker Xiao Wensheng, 49, and his wife Lam Wan, 48, who works as a waitress, pleaded guilty to a count of willful assault causing injury to a child.

Xiao also pleaded guilty to another count of willful assault causing injury to a child for and a count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm for attacking both daughters on another occasion.

Principal magistrate Peter Law Tak-chuen of the West Kowloon Court accepted the probation officer's report and placed the couple on probation.

Law ordered they must receive emotional and psychological therapy while adopting proper parenting recommendations, as suggested by the probation officer.

The 12-year-old daughter was caught stealing money at home last February and was slapped on the face and struck in the stomach by Xiao, while Lam grabbed her by the throat.

Xiao also put her in a chokehold with a belt but was stopped by his older daughter.

Last September, the younger daughter was slapped 17 to 18 times after eating food without permission.

The elder daughter was hospitalized after being hit on the head with an iron rod for buying two boxes of beer instead of one as she was instructed to.

In mitigation, the defense lawyer said the couple was remorseful.
