Cathay reshuffles leadership

Cathay Pacific Airways appointed veteran insider Mandy Ng Kit-man as chief executive of its wholly owned subsidiary HK Express as part of a vast shake-up.

Ng's appointment comes after the resignations of Cathay Pacific's chief executive Rupert Hogg and chief customer and commercial officer Paul Loo Kar-pui.

HK Express' previous chief executive Ronald Lam Siu-por will succeed Loo.

Ng will replace Lam with immediate effect, Cathay Pacific announced in a statement yesterday. The company also said Lam will be the chairman of HK Express.

The statement described Ng as a "veteran of the airline business" who has spent 17 years with Cathay Pacific.

Ng began her career with Cathay Pacific Group as a management trainee in 1999 and held a variety of positions, including the manager of airline planning, where she was responsible for overseeing scheduling, departure and arrival slots, aircraft deployment and profit optimization for its fleet of more than 200 passenger and cargo aircraft.

Before joining HK Express, Ng was the general manager of business development at Swire Pacific Limited, a position she held from July 2018.

CCTV's report on Saturday said further reshuffling will be conducted at Cathay Pacific following the resignations of Hogg and Loo.

Sources told the state broadcaster the group will "never risk the reputation of the airline and the safety of passengers for certain interests."

CCTV cited sources saying the senior management team of Swire Group, which owns Cathay Pacific, was "furious" that some of its employees were involved in the anti-fugitive bill controversy.

This prompted the group's management team to call an emergency meeting to pass through Hogg and Loo's resignations.

Cathay Pacific said it has no comment.

Meanwhile, the airline announced that it will suspend ticket sales at counters located within the airport due to the heightened security measures from the Airport Authority after days of protests, which led to nearly 1,000 flights being canceled.

"All passengers must have confirmed tickets and travel documents ready for inspection upon arrival at the airport," Cathay said, adding that customers should not proceed to the airport unless they have a confirmed booking.

An interim injunction obtained by the authority last Wednesday bans people from unlawfully and willfully obstructing or interfering with the airport's operations.

It also bars those who are not travelers or airport staff from entering the Access Control Area. The authority has since extended the area to terminal buildings.
