Ho Ho Ho and a bottle of rum with first distillery

A rum event will debut in Hong Kong from September 2 to 8, and feature the city's first locally distilled rum.

Organized by the Hong Kong Rum Festival, Hong Kong Rum Week will include a "rum run" challenge where drinkers can sample different cocktails in bars around town, attend masterclasses and celebrity bartending.

Honi Honi Tiki Cocktail Lounge, which will host the opening party, announced the creation of Hong Kong's first rum - distilled in collaboration with New Grove Rum, a 150-year-old distiller in Mauritius.

"Distilled in French oak barrels, this gives the rum a delicate, smooth and satisfying long finish. All three of the batches are distilled from a 2015 vintage, aged further by 1 months for batch number one, four months for batch number two, and six months for batch number three," according to the organizer.

On opening night, cocktails will be made from the three batches of rum.

Twelve bars across Hong Kong will participate, including Employees Only, Honi Honi, Le Boudoir, Potato Head and Piqniq.

Those participating in the "rum run" can explore new bars, try limited edition cocktails and collect stamps in a "rum passport".

They can hand in the passport to win a prize at the end of the week.

Master classes will be held around town with free samples of rum, and guest speakers will talk about the latest in rum distillation and mixology. There will be guest bartending shifts from award winning talents, including Jungle Bird from Kuala Lumpur and Buccaneers Rum & Cocktails from Manila.

At the closing party, rum week ambassador Max Traverse will showcase new and rare rums, such as Aluna Coconut Rum and New Grove Honi Honi Rum. Other well-known favorites include Appleton Estate, Diplomatico Rum, Nusa Cana and Gosling Black Seal Rum.

Traverse is a veteran in the high-end cocktail scene with over 18 years of experience in Hong Kong, France and England.
