Father admits hitting truant son

A single father yesterday admitted punching and beating his 14-year-old son with the metal tube of a vacuum cleaner after he skipped school for two weeks.

The son was in hospital for almost two weeks.

Jobless Ng Kwok-keung, 52, pleaded guilty to two counts of willful assault causing injury to a child when he appeared before West Kowloon acting principal magistrate Ada YimShun-yee.

Ng, who is a mental patient and has a violence-related criminal record, admitted that he used force against his son because the boy did not go to school for two weeks and always got home late.

The court heard that Ng assaulted his son twice at their Pak Tin Estate apartment in Shek Kip Mei on November 17 last year.

A doctor confirmed that after the incident, the boy's scalp was red and swollen. There were also scrapes and pain on his left elbow, arms and legs.

He was in hospital for 12 days.

Ng told the court yesterday that his son is now living with his sister. He visits Ng every weekend.

Ng said he had been receiving psychiatric treatment. His condition had improved since taking medicine.

Ng asked Yim: "After the case ends, can my son come back to live with me?"

The hearing was adjourned to September 9 for a probation officer's report and a welfare officer's report.

Ng was granted bail.
