Wild thing as turtle rediscovers spark of lifeLocal | Sophie Hui 23 Jul 2019
Ocean Park has returned a turtle to the sea after rehabilitation.
The turtle, called Spark and with an estimated age of between five and eight years old, was found trapped in shallow waters off northeast Hong Kong when the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department was conducting a survey last March. Its scales were in poor condition, it had many wounds on its body, and an elbow joint in a flipper was infected. Ocean Park staff also found blockages in its gastrointestinal tract.
It took around a year for Spark to recover. Treatment included removing infected bone from its right elbow.
"Spark can now swim and dive well and feed and forage," said park executive Michael Boos.
Before releasing it a transmitter was fixed to Spark's shell to monitor it for a few months.
