Old panda An An birthday marked with ticket deal

Hong Kong residents can enjoy exclusive "buy-2-get-1-free" tickets at Ocean Park to mark the 31st birthday of giant panda An An, who is now the world's oldest male giant panda in human care.

By presenting proof of identity, residents can receive a child ticket free on buying two adult tickets at the Ocean Park Ticketing Office and website from today to August 27.

Another two giant pandas in the park, Ying Ying and Le Le, were unsuccessful in mating attempts during this year's four-day breeding season, despite having been put together for natural mating opportunities.

During the breeding exercise in March, the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda and Ocean Park used Le Le's fresh semen and An An's frozen semen to artificially inseminate Ying Ying four times to supplement the natural mating attempts.

The park said Ying Ying started displaying some typical pregnancy symptoms in early July, including reduced food intake, increased resting time, a swollen vulva and corresponding hormonal changes, but said there is always a chance that she is experiencing a pseudo-pregnancy.

"We will continue to work closely with the experts to follow Ying Ying's condition, and we hope to bring some good news to the people of Hong Kong this year," said Howard Chuk Hau- chung, senior curator of terrestrial life sciences of Ocean Park.

The Giant Panda Adventure exhibit will be reopened after Ying Ying successfully gives birth to a cub, or if it is confirmed that she is not pregnant. During the closure, guests may visit An An at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Sichuan Treasures.
