The spiritual leader of independence-seeking localism, Chinese studies scholar Horace Chin Wan- kan, will not have his contract with Lingnan University renewed when it expires in August.
Chin, an assistant professor in the Chinese department and who goes by the nickname Chin Wan, confirmed on his own Facebook page that the university had formally rejected his contract renewal, ending his seven-year tenure on August 15.
Chin, who has a doctorate, could be arguably the "first casualty" among academics who supported the Occupy movement in 2014. He received an official letter from Lingnan on April 12 that his contract would not be renewed.
"I am being forced out of the campus because of criticizing the Hong Kong-communist government and supporting the Occupy Mong Kok movements in 2014," Chin wrote.
His award-winning book, Hong Kong as a City-state, published in 2011, was seen as the trigger for growing voices resisting mainland influence in local affairs.
A university spokesman said it is inappropriate to comment on staff employment. KINLING LO
